FAQ
Why is the campaign needed and what will it accomplish?
After 64 years (!) of serving us well, the 16th Avenue side of Temple’s historic and iconic Seattle campus needs to better match how we worship, gather, and learn together today. Temple’s Seattle Campus Campaign will transform the 16th Avenue Plaza, Foyer, and Alhadeff Sanctuary into spaces that are welcoming, inclusive, flexible, and secure.
Who is Temple working with to complete the project?
We are fortunate to be working with experts in their industries:
- Dave Bonewitz LLC, Owners’ Representative
- Mithun, Architects
- Sellen Construction
What is the project timeline?
Assuming we receive permits from the City of Seattle by the end of the year, we expect to “break ground” during the first quarter of 2025. We expect the project to be completed within 11-12 months. Because we are opening up 64-year-old walls, we might find additional repairs needed, but have contingencies set aside and do not anticipate they would add significant time to the project.
How will programming and operations go on during construction?
Temple staff will continue to work in the Administrative Wing. With the exception of the Youth Lounge and the Board Room under the Chapel, the 16th Avenue side of the building will be unavailable for programming. Bridge Family Religion School programming will be held entirely in the school building. Clergy and staff currently plan to hold 1-2 Shabbat services per month either in the Annex/Jaffe Room or in a nearby location. Because construction will be ongoing during the 2025 High Holy Days season, Seattle services will be held offsite for one year.
Are we waiting to raise all the money before we begin construction?
Fortunately, no. We are finalizing a short-term bridge loan that will allow us to move forward while we continue to fundraise, and to repay the loan with pledges and gifts as they are paid over time. We are working with experts Morgan Stanley and Leora Consulting LLC to ensure the loan enables our finances to remain strong.
Will the campaign impact the operating budget?
Temple continues to attract new members of all ages who want to be part of our community, and we will continue to provide both new and beloved programming to meet their needs. At the same time, we expect that the infrastructure improvements that are part of the campaign will provide savings in the operating budget by eliminating the need for expensive repairs.
How much do we need to raise?
The congregation unanimously approved a stretch goal of up to $22.5 million in June 2024. As of November 2024 we have raised almost $19.4 million!
Will we receive government funding?
Unlike some other organizations, synagogues typically rely on their members for a campaign. Just as our Seattle and Bellevue campuses were legacies of love from members, this campaign made possible by our congregants will ensure that future generations will continue to have Temple as a spiritual home to learn, gather, and pray.
